H.R. 4483 - Broadening Participation in STEM Education Act
Eddie Bernice Johnson
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX)

On Tuesday, 24 April 2012, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) introduced H.R. 4483, the Broadening Participation in STEM Education Act. The legislation authorizes the Director of the NSF to review proposals and award grants to institutions of higher education in order to increase the participation of underrepresented students in the STEM disciplines, develop and publish research that address effective interventions for increasing the participation, and assist institutions with recruiting, retaining, and advancing underrepresented faculty in STEM disciplines. While the legislation increases the authority of the Director to award grants, it will not impact existing NSF programs related to broadening participation in STEM.

The goals of the legislation are to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups earning baccalaureate degrees in STEM disciplines and the number of faculty from underrepresented groups in STEM disciplines in higher education. The legislation was referred to the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Endorsers of the bill include the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the National Action Council for Minorities in Education (NACME), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Original cosponsors of H.R. 4483 include Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL), Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO), Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL), Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX), Rep. John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), Rep. Bobby L. Rush (D-IL), Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX), and Rep. Marcia L. Fudge (D-OH).
