CMD-IT Diversity as an Innovation Resource Workshop (DIR)

CMD-IT, held its first Diversity as an Innovation Resource (DIR) Workshop on June 19-20, 2012 at AAAS in Washington, D.C.  The primary goal of this workshop series is to bring together different constituencies to collectively identify how programs, which seek to increase the participation of students/professionals from underrepresented groups into computing, can use that opportunity to foster innovative projects that impact the underrepresented communities. The major outcome from each workshop is a list of projects to be disseminated to the broad community. The time period for t
he projects is 18 months, with DIR workshops held every two years.

DIR 2012 focused on math education delivery for grades 6 through 8 in under-served communities using mobile devices. The workshop included keynote speakers Steve Robinson, White House Domestic Policy Council Special Assistant and Freeman Hrabowski III, President of The University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The first day focused on panels covering the following topics: Building Diverse User Innovation Communities, Middle School Math Concepts, Effective Use of Mobile Devices for Middle School Math, and Math Frameworks, Toolkits, and Resources. In addition, Ron Eglash gave a plenary talk on cultural-responsive tools for teaching math. The second day was focused on brainstorming sessions about projects. The workshop participants included teachers, principals, researchers in ethnomathematics, industry representatives, researchers in accessibility, and researchers in mobile devices.

Details about the project ideas resulting from this workshop will be available our DIR webpage by early August.

Grace Hopper Conference 2012 Poster

The 2012 Grace Hopper Conference, scheduled for October 3-6, 2012 in Baltimore, MD, will include a one-day track focused on issues relevant to Women of Underrepresented Groups (WURG track). The track, scheduled for Thursday, October 4, will focus on the following underrepresented groups: African American, Hispanic, Native American, and People with Disabilities to build community around shared commonalities.

The WURG track will open with a session on Developing Women Through Career Gap Analysis and Mentoring, followed by panels on Recruiting and Retaining Women from Underrepresented Groups, Coping and Mentoring Mechanisms for Women of Underrepresented Groups, and Where Are We On Computing Among Girls of Color in K-12. The track also includes the Women of Color/Women of Underrepresented Groups Luncheon, where Chieko Asakawa of IBM will be the speaker. Chieko's research is in the area of software programs for visually impaired computer users. Her personal challenge as a blind person has grown into a "Dream Jobs", where she has devoted herself to improving blind people's access to computers and the Web for 27 years. The track also includes a Speed Mentoring session immediately following lunch.

Hopper registration is now open, with the early registration deadline being July 31, 2012. The Hopper Conference offers an exciting program, for which registration often closes because of demand. So register and book your hotel as early as possible.

The WURG Track is organized by representatives from the following committee with leadership from CMD-IT:   Anita Borg Institute (ABI), the  Alliance for Access to Computing Careers (AccessComputing), ACM's Women in Computing (ACM-W), Black Women in Computing (BWiC),  Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI), Coalition to Diversify Computing (CDC), Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research (CRA-W), Latinas in Computing (LiC), National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), and Students & Technology in Academia, Research & Service Alliance (STARS).
